Understanding The Single Crochet Stitch

Yesterday I taught you the foundation chain. Today I will teach you the Single Crochet(sc) stitch. The single crochet is a basic stitch that creates a fabric that does not have a lot of holes. Each row should look straight, flat, and dense. A great building block to other, more elaborate crochet stitches.

Your example pattern may start similar to this: (However if you follow this pattern you will complete a square made from single crochets, that would be great for a washcloth. Just add a border.)

Simple Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Yo = Yarn over
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Ea = Each

I used:
Yarn: Peaches & Creme, Worsted 4. Colour: 'Blue Lagoon'.
Hook: 4.5 mm

Working right to left.
Row 1: Ch 29, sc in 2nd ch from hook. (The last loop on hook does not count as first loop!) Sc in ea st across. (27sc)
Row 2: Ch 1. Turn. Sc in ea st across.(27sc)
Rows 3-29: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off at end. (27sc) Weave in ends.

Remember to be very careful not to twist your chain as you work your stitches into it!

Row 1:

Start by making a chain of 29.

Insert hook into 2nd chain from hook(The last loop on hook does not count as first loop!)

Yo. Draw yarn through chain.

Yo. Draw yarn through both loops on hook

*Insert hook in next chain

Yo

Draw yarn through chain.
Yo
Draw yarn through both loops on hook*

Repeat from * to * across.
Be very careful not to twist your chain.

Row 2:

Ch 1. Turn.

Insert hook in next stitch.(Marked purple in previous photo) (Make sure you place this stitch in the correct location).

Yo

Draw yarn through stitch.

Yo

Draw yarn through both loops on hook

*Insert hook in next stitch
Yo
Draw yarn through stitch.
Yo
Draw yarn through both loops on hook*

Repeat from * to * across

Rows 3-29:

Repeat Row 2.

It is important to place your first & last stitch in each row in the right location, otherwise your project sides and size will be affected. Don't be afraid to count your stitches in each row. The example asks for 27 single crochets in each row. Normally the stitch count is located at the end of each row. (27sc)

Fasten off at end. Weave in ends.

Your finished project should look similar to the one pictured.
