Understanding The Half Double Crochet Stitch

I taught you the foundation chain and the Single Crochet Stitch. Today I will teach you the Half Double Crochet(hdc) stitch. The half double crochet is a basic stitch that creates a fabric that does have holes. Each row should look straight, flat, and not as dense as the Single Crochet stitch...

Your example pattern may start similar to this: (However if you follow this pattern you will complete a square made from half double crochets, that would be great for a washcloth. Just add a border.)

Simple Abbreviations:

Ch = Chain
Hdc = Half Double Crochet
Yo = Yarn over
St(s) = Stitch(es)
Ea = Each

I used:
Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Cotton Yarn
Hook: 4.5 mm

Working right to left.
Row 1: Ch 31, hdc in 3rd ch from hook. (The last loop on hook does not count as first loop!) Hdc in ea st across. (29hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2. Turn. Hdc in ea st across.(29hdc)
Rows 3-19: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off at end. (29hdc) Weave in ends.

Remember to be very careful not to twist your chain as you work your stitches into it!

Row 1:

Start by making a chain of 31.
Yo.

Insert hook into 3rd ch from hook.

Yo.

Draw yarn through stitch.

Yo.

Draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.

*Yo.

Insert hook in next chain

Yo.

Draw yarn through chain.

Yo.

Draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.*

Repeat from * to * across.
Be very careful not to twist your chain.

Row 2:

Ch 2. Turn.

Yo.

Insert hook in next stitch.

Yo

Draw yarn through stitch.

Yo.

Draw yarn through 3 loops on hook.

*Yo.

Insert hook in next stitch.

Yo

Draw yarn through stitch.
Yo

Draw yarn through 3 loops on hook*

Repeat from * to * across.
Rows 3-19:
Repeat Row 2.

Purple marks where you will work the first stitch in each row.

It is important to place your first & last stitch in each row in the right location, otherwise your project sides and size will be affected. Don't be afraid to count your stitches in each row. The example asks for 29 half double crochet in each row. Normally the stitch count is located at the end of each row. (29hdc)

Fasten off at end. Weave in ends.

Your finished project should look similar to the one pictured.
